This series focuses on the materiality of the painting process. The layering that obscures form and content on the surface of the panel echoes the dysfunctions of language. In short, the lack of clear references is key to the work. By investigating language on a meta-level, I am developing forms that do not follow logical criteria but are based on subjective associations and formal parallels which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.
My work here doesn’t reference recognizable form rather I am deconstructing ideas of things and places by paring them down to textures and color blocks and marks that have been applied and smeared to obscure their original intent or message. This labor-intensive act shifts the meaning and possible interpretations for the viewer and becomes multifaceted. The patterns used reference the long tradition of Damask textiles. Their intricate imagery is reflective of nature and thus works well for building the layers in this series.
My paintings establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence.

My landscapes are images that speak to a sense of place, a vague memory of being there. Encoding is the crucial first step to creating a new memory. It allows the perceived item of interest to be converted into a construct that can be stored in the brain. My paintings seek to make time visible. Whether driving by in a car or moving in other forms of transportation, we pay attention to our environment in momentary glimpses. If a memory was laid down then these “sights” remain in our subconscious having been converted into a construct. My works are a still snapshot of moments that I develop on the surface of the panel. I use sketches and photographs to inspire my work but the paintings develop through a process which is largely organic.

My abstract cityscapes and landscapes are about a sense of place, a vague memory of being there. I find myself gravitating to a simple house shape as the subject of my paintings. Houses, farm buildings and warehouses have always sparked my storytelling imagination. I see personalities, expressions, and faces in buildings that I take photos of and record in sketchbooks. By layering the buildings or using the shape individually I am able to conjure a feeling of place for me and the viewer. We may not see the same place in the piece but it brings about an immediate reaction, often a “naming” of where the scene is located.

Painting as Object is about bringing attention to the materiality of a painting and its objectness. By cutting into the surface of the panel and creating a reversed area in which to paint I am pushing the painting itself into the realm of sculpture. I am revealing the paintings’ physical depth along with its flat pictorial illusional surface. My painting Postcard with Wild Prairie Rose is influenced by traditional landscapes with notions of foreground and background, movement and structure. Thought has been given to spatial themes through compositional experimentation, and the capture of certain tensions and moments of balance. By cutting into the panel and creating a separate painting space I am inviting the viewer to consider the work as sculpture or as painting or both. To assess whether the cutout area is a painting on its own or maybe the history of the layers we see in the result of the larger painting. This 3 dimensional space provides a new dialog about the intuitive application of paint and mediums on the surface as a whole. If you will, a painting with a sculpture within a painting.

This series is called “Under One Roof”. The conceptual work for the houses began in July of 2019.
The sculptural forms and paintings are oil and cold wax on custom made birch panels or sculptural forms. The series was designed to represent my need to be connected to family and especially to my own home. The layers in each work, which are developed over time are like the many layers of our lives at home.This name had a personal meaning when I conceived of it but now after our confinement, and new way of living in the world, I think the work has a much more universal message.
Most paintings are 8 x 8 or 6 x 6 with roof 12.5 x 9.5 and 9.5 x 7.5
